Child Citizenship
The United States Government recently enacted new rules for citizenship for children born outside the United States. In most cases, a child, who was born outside the United States and who has one or both parents who are U.S. citizens, can obtain citizenship at birth or after birth, but before age 18.
Jody B. Marten can help you determine if your child is eligible for a Certificate of Citizenship. There are many advantages to obtaining the Certificate of Citizenship:
- Your child can use the certificate for identification.
- The certificate can be used when obtaining basic educational benefits.
- It can be used when applying for a social security number and a passport.
- If the certificate gets lost, your child can readily secure a duplicate Certificate from USCIS.
Jody B. Marten is an experienced immigration attorney. She has long been an advocate to ensure that eligible children born outside the United States receive their certificates of citizenship. She developed the Children’s Citizenship Project to help parents of children adopted through from other countries with the U.S. citizenship process. The Project’s goal is to ensure that eligible children become documented US citizens.

Naturalization
The naturalization process has multiple steps for petitioners, including
- Filing the necessary paperwork.
- Arranging for a biometric appointment, if needed.
- An interview
- Language and civics tests.
- Taking an oath of allegiance.
Jody B. Marten can lead you through the various steps of the naturalization and discuss if you qualify for any accommodations or exceptions. She consults on citizenship and naturalization cases and can act of counsel. She is well qualified to handle naturalization cases for persons requiring a disability exemption. She has worked in immigration for many years: for the government, at the United States Catholic Conference Migration and Refugee Services and now in private practice. She has represented clients before the Immigration Court and at the Board of Immigration Appeal, served as an expert witness and worked on policy used by immigration judges. Under the sponsorship of the Women’s Bar, Ms. Marten arranged naturalization ceremonies on behalf of the D.C. Bar in Federal District Court.
